Colorist Dominicans 馃槫

My mind accept it without a doubt, its so easy to accept at first but the complexity of the reality makes me doubt about that generalization.

It contrast with my dark skinned sister being priced as the beautiful, and enjoying of a popularity i wish i had (shared by others who had dark brown to black skin)

It contrast with my inspiring uncle's (RIP), success story being a rector in the country's college.

There is no doubt that we still have racist asholes, anti haitian ultra nacionalist, self haters, eurocentrist, hispanophiles, have found a couple of each one here, and left  a mark in my perception of my own country through out my life. Also showed me that not everything  is what it seems...or whatever translation to the phrase "no todo es lo que parece". Specially when it comes to racist:

This kind is a special and interesting one, its easy to lable someone that doesnt like dark skin as racist until you meet a real racist.

The first thing is that they are good at hidding their views, are people who pretend to be well educated and barnish their belief in racial clasification with ethnocentrims ..I mean for them seems is more accepted to have a point of view centered in an specific ethnic group or a cultural poing if view,  than a racist one, which makes me think that at first they have experienced a cultural influence from a society that has a racial clasification( by the way indio, white, black...are not racial clasification here, but a phisical characteristic that is put in the cedula to help to identify the person..its so subjetve that for some people i am india color but for other i am white).
Going back to the racist, they have a superioroty complex, the times Ive heard one speaking, they feel like the rest of us are a bunch of idiots馃檮 the words they use to impress, the way they refer to the rest of the people is like 馃 we were specimens, and something very important, they avoid to engage in social activities that has relation to any group of people that they dont consider "at their level".

Once after watching a documentary about racist, decided to check online a forum for them and get pissed up for a while, searched in the forun dominican reoublic and foud a DOMINICAN  waning about being the only white comunity that is in danger in a country of blacks 馃ぃ no offence but if you dont like it go to spain with your white brothers and sisters, i thought most be a serrano (ive been told that in the sierra many criollos, decendants of canarios didnt want to mix so they lived withdrowed from the rest, i dont know with who they married at some point everyone will be cousines, not sure if its that drastic the situation thought).

So, what about those that dislike haitians that I find in the daily basis that make stupid jokes related to them馃檮.

At first I was completely convinced was because, obviously were racist, for real I was horrorified with their behavior (still are) but in many cases their other comments  doesnt fit with the racist kind I descibed above:

The use of the word race: comaidering dominicans, puerto ricans, haitians, african americans, jamaicams...all races by themselves. Realized race = ethnic group or nacionality for them...also the word "ethicity" is a word that is unknown by many, for sure if i tell them what is an ethnicity wouldnt find a difference to the way they use the word race, that itself isnt used  generaly, to reffer to a different group  they use the country/region/family someone belong to.

Pricing the appereance of someone from different country doesnt matyer if its dark skinned or doesnt has cara fina (thin features): this same people ive heard them say after: they are inteligent (heard that when refering to haitians), pracing the body of a woman in the street, again doesnt matter if its haitian or other country or being dark skin...that kind of stuff that a racist kind of person like the ones I described above, never do..because ugly point of vew they have 馃ぁ.

At the end I reslized that their behavior toward haitians, has characteristic with rivalty, xenifobia, ignorance in some cases or just saying that everyone says..like following the cround. Almost forgot that they also are blunt describing other ethnicities perpetuating misconceptions but interacting in social media with other people.around the world i feel that sadly is human nature i have still to learn to let go.

What about those that joden with the word, prieto (dark skinned), carbon, "haitian"(for dark skinned dominicans only) as an insult 馃檮 to dark skinned people. Again I thought "racist asholes", then recalled that as I kind I used those words, ans other kids that were dark skinned used it to piss other dark skinned kids, one can think its a kid stuff, but kids dont come up with this type of shit just from no where, so in one of those mental trips to my past experiences trying to recal, the people Ive heard use that word, bam! Bingo, when i was a kind an adult (darksinned cousin) used that word to anoy my sister, I recall the experience, not because it shocked me ( that way to anoy someone is pretry extended), but because how that day i was pissed idk, the point is that he was acting childish, and have to say is hard to reval this word being used by a mature person even if the person was adult馃檮, also they not just use words refering to skin color but hair texture (caco de brillo馃槨=disher scrubber hair) but also the same people attacked you by body type (palillo=stick, cuerpo de botellon=water gallon body) and facial features (nariz de camion=truck nose).
From that can we asume that doesnt have a racist background??? Wait...why not spaniard(usually spaniard refers to european here for some people regional differences in concepts come in play) features being used as an insult then. At least in the regions Ive been (south and north) this are common stupid expresions, and def have a racist or eurocentric background(historically we were a spanish colony so they set was was acceptable at that time, and their decendants did the same after restauration), and I wish them to be erradicated for the good of humanity also with the despective words refearing to features to other ethnic group characteristics  but lets be real its hard because humanity will always look for a word to piss other off, i mean i dont like my hair to be compared with a fucking brillo, as some people that doesnt have the curvy back that its typical in those with african ancestry have, to be called tabla =wood ( i used to feel ashamed because of it, but was priced by it being told i would have a hot body when I grew up), or too pale people to be called paper or candle, in the past parents slapped kids using words that were innapropiate strict parents cause others were as childish as their kids, but this is far from ending, the good thing is that the big majority of people Ive encountered with this behavior wont kill you because your features but for sure will piss you off馃槫. To clarify, there are better eyes to european festures because of the historical context, that even if a campo relates more to a quilombo(manieles in dominican)  they couldnt scape from the eurocentric beauty standart. But times are changing the curly hair movement is making normal again afros (they were really popular in the 60s but for dudes) and other african styles, only wish that they explore more the african originated hairstyles done by our ancestors like the rateo (its basically african threding) not just cornrows and boxbraids. But idgf i use my cabello rateado (african thredded hair to continue with the tradition).

Lets not forget the hispanophiles, and they are not just in dominican reoublic but in whole hispanic america, this people i dont thin they celebrate the Restauration day, and love Pedro Santana...they most get pissed everytime they hear trash being told about him being a traitor to the country. This individuals love spain and wish we were part of the spanish empire, that we would be batter that way, they hate anglos because...historical reasons (spain and england were rivals) and because they think that anglos want to fusion the island in a single country, removing them from the hispanidad. There is nothing else to say  here lets move on.

And anti haitian their hate is directed to them and anyone that support them, they too think that there still the desire to own the island and that there is an inteligent plot designed by haitians authorities to make a pascific invasion. In this group of peopke you can find teamed, some hispanophiles(that still preffer to be part of spain but its better to be an ex spanish colony than a haitian rule), the racist.

Dont confuse this groups with nacionalist that are patriotic and love dominicanity, dont like anyone to be dominating us, and feel the part in the national athem "many times we will be slaves but many others we will be free" i feel many of us identify with this athem, cause nobody tell a dominican what to do (instead of your mom with a belt), even if we are a jungle, we are proud jungle people.

Going back to anti haitian, they hate everything haitian and usually there is a religious content (they practice vudu and we are catholic  type of narrative, they ignore that in haiti there has been raids againts vudu priest and that still not an oficial religion and that in dominican republic many go to brujos to tie a lover too like in many countries).
They fear that dominicans get too friendly with haitians and that a mix could not just end with dominicanity.  Many of those people Ive encountered they dont have lots of knoledge of the diverce dominican culture, that is easy ignored because many times this cultural variations are in villeages  and when people move to the cities a process of transculturalization happens. There are grups of individuals that make efforts to rescue those traditions and make them not just for the villeage but for the whole dominican population, not chaning a villeage traditions but that people are aware of the cultural diversity, like the unexplored cimarron culture that the hispanophiles, anti-haitian amd racist want to ignore because diesnt fit their idea of dominicanity, but still part even if you cover your eyes because if has survibed until now why not a pair of centuries more 馃し馃徑‍♀️.

In my opinion, many of those elements that ive described above come from an identity crisis, in other cases just ignorance. The good part is that many domis  are clear of who they are and are not obsessed with race, ethnicity etc, they just care of survival in this beautiful jungle, but some need to learn to love ...yes to love themselves, love dominican culture as a whole too.
"How could you love others if you dont live your self" statement can be applied to a larger level, if dominicans accept all the aspects of the culture, not just cherry picking the ones they want to show to their other hispanophiles friends, there can be more unity, less fear to loose oir identity because we will know who we are and accept our history, dont feel less because we are a jungle (some people use it as a peyorative).

That could be achieved with education, not indoctrination and favoring a culture over other since many cultures put their pinch of salt in RD, also people should visit ither campos (villeages) with open mind, not go there and say "this is not dominican" 馃檮 if they say so they will need to check what the hell is dominican, only a group of people and their culture and way of life, if thats so dominican republic is tinier than a thought then. But i have to say this also goes to a personal level, someone that has self hate wont be able to se things clearly because they have emotional issues to address, you need to be less attached to aparent things to be open to find the truth, but this is an individual trip and even if we want to, we wont be able to alter this individual destiny and path.

Buen dia to all mores 馃槝
